Well, officially both can be correct, but I prefer to follow this simple rule, if the common name matches the scientific group of the organism (e.g., a house fly is a true fly) then the common name should be written as 2 words. If the common name does not match the scientific group of the organism (e.g., a dragonfly is not a true fly) then the common name should be written as one word.
